I really want to live in california when I get out of college but right now i live in central new york and so does all of my family. Someone told me that the ocean is always freezing even in the summer. Is this true? and is it also really populated there.?

I adore it out here. And I've lived in both northern and southern CA. It really is a beautiful state. Lots of very diverse terrain. In southern CA you can go snow skiing and to beach in one day. It's awesome.

As for the ocean being cold. Well, yeah, it's not going to get to bath water, but in the summer the weather is so hot that the ocean feels fantastic. But there's nothing like driving to beach on a hot day with a cheeseburger and a vanilla milkshake from In-n-Out Burger(a fast food restaurant you will come to LOVE when you're out here) while blasting Beach Boys music. Cheesy, I know, but I love that feeling.
And yes, parts of CA are very crowded. LA is the second largest city in the nation (the first is obviously NYC). But CA has a lot of redeeming qualities as well. Take a trip out here and see how you like it.

Oh, something else that's a plus: We have dry heat out here. No humidity! Yay!

Some areas around Los Angeles, California are very populated. But not near the beaches, like around Malibu. Maybe around the city (inner city). But California is great. NY is great too. It's hard to compare two great states.

No, the ocean is not freezing in the summer. It's freezing in the winter.

Well Los Angeles County is the most populated in the United States...so yes it is crowded...A vacation out here might help you answer the question as to why so many people have come here...maybe you will find something that suits you..nothing is written in stone you can always go back with no shame...if you don't like it.... The ocean is colder that you think it will be...but it's fine...

Stay out of the big cities, because big cities here are like big cities everywhere.
Southern CA, along the ocean is paradise. Freezing water???
Well it is the Pacific not the Caribbean, try about 68-69 degrees in the summer. The surfers wear light weight summer wet suits because they are in for long periods of time. The swimmers and boogie boarders don't. Come out and visit for awhile, if you decide not to stay it is OK, we have enough people here who refuse to ever leave.

The ocean IS always COLD, and the beach itself isn't all that warm with the winds whipping in off the water. (People in L.A. go to the beach to "cool off".) It's extremely over-populated now, and getting more congested by the year. The "sprawl" is slowly heading upward, as more high-rises are being built to accommodate all the flow into L.A. Traffic's a nightmare. (Can you tell I'll soon be trading it in for more wide open spaces?)

I think Central New York sucks. I have family in Rochester and Ithaca...and I hate going over there. There are some nice people, but there is a broken spirit in the people in that part of the country. There are too many Lefty people up there who are born losers...an enormous welfare state up there.

California is a broad place...but SoCal and the Bay Area, are easily better places.

But I think NY City and Boston are pretty kewl.

Go visit it on vacation and find out. I love it; others may not. The oceans are colder than the atlantic in the summer. It's beautiful though.
