I can understand that it is a common mental illness . what is it ?

Also called Bi-Polar. You would need to be seen by a physician. There are several types and it would be hard to answer all. Go to the title on the internet and it will answer many questions about all the signs.

I would also like to say that it is a non-violent disorder. If you are a violent person normally you will be a violent depressive if yo are a meek and non violent person, the same the disease does not make you violent

The correct term now, is BiPolar Disorder. It is a mental illness with altering episodes of depression and mania. There are actually four types.
It is a disease that effects your whole life.IIt is usually dx in your 20's, but can be earlier or later in life. It can, however, be controlled through medication, therapy, and coping skills.

More is being learned about it every day. In the past, people with BP were misdiagnosed with schizophrenia, multiple personalities, and other mental disorders.
If you or a loved one are newly dx BiPolar, try reading "BiPolar Disorder for Dummies". It is a wonderful reference that should be handed out with every dx.
