I think I heard a 'thief in the night' quote on here once.

Actually, it's a quiet event. Most, if not all, believe it to be booming and loud and very obvious. However, Jesus said it will be a quiet event without trumpets and fanfare.

Below in vs 20 & 21, the emphasis is mine.

LUKE 17 (New American Standard Bible)

20 Now having been questioned by the Pharisees as to when the kingdom of God was coming, He answered them and said, "The kingdom of God IS NOT COMING WITH SIGNS TO BE OBSERVED; (emphasis mine)

Comment:
Signs to be observed - Jesus said the next coming will not be a spectacle.

21 nor will they say, 'Look, here it is!' or, 'There it is!' For behold, the kingdom of God IS IN YOUR MIDST."

Comment:
No one will say, "Whoa, look at Jesus!!!" because his coming will not be obvious. Rather, he will be in our MIDST... this means he will be AMONG US.

Look, if God makes Messiah-spotting easy for us, then there won't be anyone carefully on the watch for the Messiah. God wants us to WANT HIM.

22 And He said to the disciples, The days will come when you will long to see one of the days of the Son of Man, and you will not see it.

Comment:
Son Of Man (SOM) = Jesus, and Jesus is saying that because he will have gone, the disciples will long to see him, but they won't be able to. He'll be in heaven.

26 And just as it happened in the days of Noah, so it will be also in the days of the Son of Man:

27 they were eating, they were drinking, they were marrying, they were being given in marriage, until the day that Noah entered the ark, and the flood came and destroyed them all.

Comment:
People will be living as usual, not noticing anything, not being on the watch of the 2nd coming. They will NOT NOTICE HIM. He *did* say that his coming will not have signs to be observed, yes? So if there aren't these obviously big signs, signs that no one can deny if they saw, then rather than sitting back and taking it for granted that his coming will not be missed, we need to be ON THE WATCH.

In the days of Noah (when Noah was alive), people were not on the watch. They ignored God. They didn't notice anything because they weren't looking. So, we need to look for Jesus' coming, and not rely upon any observable spectacles, because there won't be any. No coming down on clouds, no literal trumpet blasts, nothing of the sort. Even LORD JESUS HIMSELF said so!

He will wake up half the world. That is one of the reasons that "no man can know the day or hour" of his return. It will be 24 different hours over two different days when it happens. But according to the scriptures, it will only take "the twinkling of an eye", which means a fraction of a second.

Jesus will come when no one knows it. All Christians could be sleeping or at work or some where and not even know that Jesus is back on earth. Jesus will come at one time and it will be for all time zones just a certain time zone.

Behold! Every eye shall see Him! People like you will try to run and hide asking the very mountains to fall on you rather than face the wrath of the Most High!

1 Thessalonians 5
1Now, brothers, about times and dates we do not need to write to you, 2for you know very well that the day of the Lord will come like a thief in the night. 3While people are saying, "Peace and safety," destruction will come on them suddenly, as labor pains on a pregnant woman, and they will not escape.
4But you, brothers, are not in darkness so that this day should surprise you like a thief. 5You are all sons of the light and sons of the day. We do not belong to the night or to the darkness. 6So then, let us not be like others, who are asleep, but let us be alert and self-controlled. 7For those who sleep, sleep at night, and those who get drunk, get drunk at night. 8But since we belong to the day, let us be self-controlled, putting on faith and love as a breastplate, and the hope of salvation as a helmet. 9For God did not appoint us to suffer wrath but to receive salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ. 10He died for us so that, whether we are awake or asleep, we may live together with him. 11Therefore encourage one another and build each other up, just as in fact you are doing.
