A boy at my sons school knocked him down and caused my son to chip his tooth on this boys head. As a dental assistant, I know what will need to be done to repair the tooth. Of course, my boss would do the work for free, but I don't feel that he should have to pay for the cost of the materials. I have been told that schools have accident insurance to cover things like this.

Is that true?

The reason I ask, is that I had a child come in last year that had broken a tooth at school and the school paid for it to be repaired. I don't know that this kids parents could be made to pay if it was indeed an accident. Like I said, since I work for a dentist, getting it fixed is no problem, but someone has to pay for the cost of the materials and I don't think it should be my boss even though I know he would do it for me.

I don't see why the school should be responsible for something an individual child did. I would handle the situation with the other boy's parents IF the child knocked him down on purpose. Accidents happen (which I realize is why people have accident insurance), but if the school wasn't being negligent, I don't see bothering with getting the school to pay for it. Besides, can you imagine all the red tape you'd get tangled in trying to get the insurance to cover it?

Its possible, but unlikely. The vast majority of employers request documentation of full time student status for children over the age of 19. However, very infrequently, you'll find an employer who will cover a dependent up until X age regardless of full time student status. You should already have the answer to this question, but might not realize where to look. Your health care policy (sometimes called Summary Plan Document or Certificate of Coverage) should very clearly define eligible dependents. It will tell you exactly under what circumstances children can be covered under your policy - up until what age, student or not?, financial dependency and residency requirements, etc. If you can't find your copy of the policy, you should be able to request one either through the insurer or the employer.

i think some do and some don't. i would ask the school if they carry such a thing. i don't think any school that i went to did. however, i agree that the school or the kids parents should pay for what had happened. i would also ask them what is being done for a punishment for the kid that did this if you do not know anything about it. some schools do not enforce punishment unless a parent gets down on them and makes them. i hope this helps you out and he feels better. just tell him to try to stay away from the person who did this and to not be afraid to tell if something like this happens again. good luck.

Usually at the beginning of the year, my kids always bring home a pamphlet for accident insurance for the school that I would have to purchase i dont think they themselves will cover anything.

maybe the other boys parents would be more liable, but you would have to file suit to force them if they refused to admit to liability. Generally, the schools will not be forced by the court to pay for this type of incident, but sometimes they will agree to pay for it to avoid litigation or publicity.

if the school was negligent and did cause the accident the school should pay for it.

They should. But, my son's school also had "additional" insurance coverage if we wanted more for while he was at school. Please check with your local school dist. office. Take care.
