The passage way to his stomach may be narrow. I suggest taking him to a doctor and having him examine him. Be careful what you feed him so he does not choke. Make sure that everyone that takes care of him knows CPR on infants. This is very important since he could get food lodged. I suggest having him eat baby food Step 2 and Some Step 3 foods. This should do the trick until you can take him to the doctor.

Sounds like he may need to be seeing an Occupational Therapist to work on his gag reflex and swallowing?? Some people need to have their solid food pureed and the liquids thickened, and actually learn how to eat and swallow. A lot also depends on his actual age, a year could be 12 months or 23 months, big difference in eating habits between those two ages... Best thing to do, at this point would be to suggest that your cousin speak to the Doctor about these issues and see if the Doctor can get therapy, if they feel it is needed! Meanwhile, don't be feeding the kid foods they could choke on such as chunks of meat, solid veggies, etc...

My little guy has a very strong gag reflex and hates most textures. If he even looks at certain foods he gags. Be patient and find foods he will eat. Or puree foods to a texture he does like. Most of all, be patient and don't force him. Forcing him will only result in more mess to clean up.
Maybe the water is too cold or he's getting too much at one time and can't handle it, try giving him a straw.
