you do not really gain, you just do not lose any weight as your body goes into hibernation / starvation mode and tries to hold on to whatever little food it gets

The less you eat to begin with the faster your body's metabolism slows down to "the point where you begin to gain". It depends on how much you're eating and how your individual body responds. The slower and safer you do it the longer it'll take to reach the point of gaining. which is what you want if you're trying to lose weight.

It depends on your weight. Your body at whatever weight your are needs a certain amoung of calories to maintain that wieight. If you eat more, you will gain weight.

at first your body will lose "weight" from the decreased intake of carbohydrates. when excess blood sugar is stored as glycogen in the body as water are stored along with it at about a 1:3 ratio. so for every molecule of glycogen there are 3 molecules of water.

so after the initial weight loss from glycogen/water your body will start to catabolize muscle proteins (lean body mass) for amino acids. as lean body mass is sacrificed the body fat increases.

so at the end of your starvation diet you would have lost "weight" on the scale but increased your body fat percentage making yourself fatter than previously...

If you dont eat enough calories, it makes you lose weight but when you start eating normal calories again it makes your metabolism slower.

starving your body is not good at all. If you don't excersize and eat more than you need then you will get plumper. 500 calories is not the answer for everyone.
