Because most people want the benefits of a strong military to protect our country but don't want to make the sacrafices to get them. They think that their children are "special" and somebody elses children should join up...not theirs.

One reason and one reason only. They do not want them to go to war. We are shown the bad and the ugly. As far as many can tell there is nothing coming from this war in Iraq. Why would a parent want their child to fight in a war that means nothing to so many? Ignorance is bliss, but not in this case. Unfortunately being in the military does not mean what it did 30 years ago. That should tell you where our society is headed. Pretty scary.

Could be any number of reasons. I think mostly, parents would rather their children do something they think is safe. So they want their kids to stay out of the military for the same reason they would want them to not do any dangerous job. Some parents also oppose the current war being fought, and would rather their offspring not be supporting it.

I can see them spacing out when the draft was still going on but now it's a totally free to sign up or not. They should be proud that their children are wanting to fight for America, I know I would. I served in the Marines and I served proudly!

I'm a parent & a Grandparent. During the Vietnam war there was a draft, two of my sons had to go into the service. I talked both of them into going into the Navy before they received their draft notices. They served & did their duty, but I considered them safer than being in the army or marines. I had two brothers who were Marines one served in Korea. I have a Grandson who joined the army 1 month ago, I am sick about it! He is an only son. I don't want to see him wounded or killed.
Every parent feels the same way, unless it is a World War, then we know they must serve. But in this, Police Action, boys are being killed. I consider our army being sent to another country without a declaration of war, as a Police Action & why should we send our sons to die for countries that would do nothing for us if the tables were turned!
During peace time, I see joining the service as a good choice for many of our young. If we happen to go to war while they are in the service, then they must pay their dues, as many of our young have done in Iraq. But the war is over, bring them home!

Make no mistake about it! Parents know that their child's chance of survival in wartime is not good. I am a parent who discouraged my naive son from joining the Marines with his friend. I worry for the friend!!!
