My son who is 27 and daughter in law are moving to florida. They bought a house there. They are having a going away party tomorrow. I don't know what to get or bring. I'm upset they are moving so far away.

I don't think you need to bring a going away gift.. they are only moving not leaving the family! Why not bring them a nice housewarming present when you visit them in Florida instead :)

If he's that violent and your daughter fears for her safety then she needs to get an order of protection. As far as replacing clothing and other material objects she'll have to go through small claims court if the value was under $5 thousand. She will need receipts and the property that was destroyed to prove her side. However he probably won't pay her a dime regardless of the ruling. More than likely it's just a loss on her part. Her safety is more important than material objects. If you value your family heirlooms, keep them safe in your home.

You don't really need to get them a "going away" gift. But if you really feel you want to give them something, try this:

Give them a gift card for dinner at a restaurant(major restaurants chains have locations all over the U.S.), that way they can either use it along the trip there, or for once they arrive. They probably won't be able to cook at their new place at least for a night or two.

And give them a nice photo of all of you together. You take it at the going away party and then send it to them later. A 'something to remember us by', maybe with a nice frame.

Inlude a note, "There might be miles between us, but never far in thought."

When we moved half way across the country, we had a party a week or so before as well. My in laws did attend the party, but did not bring a gift. We did not expect any gifts, frankly, and I was relieved that not many people did bring gifts.

By the way, I have the best in laws in the world. My mother in law was crying so hard that we were leaving, she caused a domino effect.

how about a picnic hamper filled with goodies, bottled water, handi-wipes, gum, etc.? that way they don't have to stop quite as often!
and even though you made a point here about being upset, its probably a bit daunting for them and they need your support right now.....this isn't about you.
they are on their way to a new and hopefully better life.......you should be happy for them. after all that is what a loving parent wants for their children...... for every generation to do better than the last! right?
cheer up.........you can go visit them once they are settled. and they aren't falling off the face of the earth or leaving the family........its only florida!
cheers!

Money....Thats the best thing. Its what my husband and I both say we'd want if we were young again and moving. Wrap it up in a box though, so they have to open it.*
