I bought a stainless steel cocktail shaker (the three piece kind) yesterday and the top piece (above the strainer) is stuck. The metal is really slippery and I can't get a good grip on it. Can anyone give me any tips on loosening it?

This happens all the time with the three piece kind. That's why bars don't use them. Freeze it then run hot water over the top bit.
Cold will contract the bottom and heat will expand the top. Repeat for part 2.

Let it sit in warm water for a few minutes. Heat will make the metal contract and then you should be able to get the lid off.

The washer or rubber liner of the cap may need to be lubed a little and it will stick until it is worn a bit. I suggest 'lubing' it with a white vermouth, just oily enough and leaves no taste or odor.

Also, the ice cold will make the metal expand so when you are ready to remove the strainer lid it too may give you a hard time. All you have to do is keep the cap on (so as not to spill) and give the strainer lid alittle tap on the edge of the kitchen counter and it will pop off.

Shakers are designed to be this way, I threw my first couple out because I thought they were defective. Stupid me but hey.

I keep my shakers in the freezer so I have to tap the lids off each use. No biggie.

Very common problem. Easy solution next tome is to not use the top part of the shaker. Use a glass inverted inside the shaker, shake, if it sticks a little bang it lightly on the bar and it will come apart no problem, then you can use the strainer

Those little tops always stick. Try the hot water, if that doesn't do it tap on it with something, all I can think that won't damage it.

I've tried it all with hot and cold water, oil, detergent- even a wine opener. Nothing helped until I used the hammer. I placed the shaker horizontally on a soft floor and gently pounded around the edge of the cover- after 10 strokes the lid popped out.

Freeze the shaker after completely filling it with water & standing it upright in the freezer. The expanding water freezing will move the lid more than a quarter inch! Works first time every time!

I don't know if you've got drink in it or not, a suggestion would be to put it in the freezer for a few minutes. The cold may cause the metal to contract enough so that if you tap it lightly against a hard surface the top may become unstuck...Good Luck and Cheers!

Think this one is called a "Hot Shot".. Great for greeting guests in cold weather and driving off the Chill.... Shot Glass of Cinnamon Schnapps 3 or 4 Shakes of Tabasco Red (NO SUBSTITUTE!)

Try soaking it in hot water. That might expand the metal enough to loosen it up. To grip it try wrapping rubber bands around it to give yourself something to get hold of.
