The earth did spin straight up and down. For a thorough explanation, I would suggest that you get a copy of the Hovind Theory from drdino.com. It is the only theory that uses science and other evidences for this event that makes any kind of sense!!

Why don't you ask him? There is a good reason why God does everything he does. It just happens that as people our minds are too simple to understand the creation of the earth and all things in it.
