I'm not quite sure what to do...I'm in a really anti-social mood and I have this party to go to...there's only one person there that I know well, the others I've only met once. It'd be nice to get to know them better and I said I'd be there. What do I do? What would look worse: not show up at all or go and seem kinda distant and quiet?

I'm on the fence on this one. If you're only feeling anti-social because you think it will be an uncomfortable situation -- then go. Chances are you will have a good time once you get there and relax. You are predicting that you will be distant and quiet, but you said you'd like to get to know them better, so I'd bet you'd liven up once there. On the other hand, if you're really feeling anti-social, as in you would really rather stay home alone and watch movies, then you should do that. Only you know if you're sincerely in the mood to be alone, or just avoiding a situation that might cause a little discomfort at first. Good luck!

If you don't go, you at least owe the hosts the courtesy of a phone call.. and it would be better to not go than to seem 'kinda distant and quiet'. I'd say to go.. and expect to have a good time! Make sure you have your own transportation, and if it turns out that you really can't get in the mood, get a 'headache' and go home! But with any luck you'll have a wonderful time :)

If you really don't want to go, then don't. Just make sure you telephone and make your apologies that you're not feeling up to attending. So, it would look worse if you didn't show up without letting anyone know.

However, if you do go and you seem distant and quiet, people might think there is an air of mystery about you and they will be dying to get to know you.

Go and make an appearance. Let your manners dictate your behavior. When you are kind and polite and smiling you will find the reciprocation infectious and could end up having a good time. Give it an hour and if after that hour you are still feeling anti-social then make your excuses and go home.

Been there and done that! It never fails that when we do something that we don't want to when we have to... we end up meeting the one person that seems to make our lives make more sense!!! Weird but true. If I go out of the house looking 'plain' it never fails that I will meet someone interesting! I've done it as a diagnostic and the results were the same!! So.... GO TO THAT PARTY!!!!!

ooo, i hate that - been there, felt that. take a shower and then put on some great music to pump you up (not music that matches your mood, but "going out" music). get dressed into something cute and do your make-up up for a fun night out. that's what i've found helps me - showering is like starting from scratch again. have fun!

Why do you 'have to' go? Did you promise? Do you feel social pressure? I think parties should be fun, if you don't want to go, you shouldn't be required to!
