I just bought a 2002 Chevy Avalanche for a pretty good price. Five days after I bought it I notice coolent on the ground. I took it to a Firestone and they told me i had a blown head gasket.. It runs smooth, it doesn't smoke, and it doesn't run hot. I checked back again and they told me that the water haven't reached the oil yet. Are they trying to rob me or did I catch the leak in time?

Those are common for intake gasket leaks that appear to be a head gasket to the eye usually at the driver front corner, done many!

Sounds more like a coolant leak. Look under your truck and see if anything is wet. Also check the floor of the interior for moisture (if the heater core is leaking, that's probably where it would end up).

If you had a head gasket leaking THAT much, it would probably be in the oil or you'd be burning it, or it would obviously be leaking to the outside.

Get a second opinion, or better yet, go over your engine compartment and under-dash area with a fine-toothed comb and figure out where the leak is coming from.

Are you having to always put water in it? If you are then the answer is yes, however it could be leaking between the head and the block and NOT leaking into a combustion chamber. Hence the reason you're not blowing steam or misfiring.

Get a second opiniion. It may just be leaking coolant. I've heard lots of horror stories about mechanics wanting to fix the wrong thing. Take it to the Chevy dealership.

If the head gasket is blown, you will notice STEAM blowing out of your exhaust pipe(s). Ever see a tea kettle with boiling water in it and notice the steam drifting up thru the spout? That is sort of what it will look like only it will be coming out of your tail-pipe.

Why would you take it to Firestone? They sell tires. There technician aren't qualified enough to get a job at a dealer. The place doen't make any money on the tire sales so they try to make it up on ripping people off.

Always get a second opinion, or maybe even a third or fourth.
