Alright man, here is what I would do. Look into getting a late 80s, early 90s Honda. I am not sure how the registration fees and whatever work in NY as opposed to CA, but figure all that out before buying. Make sure that the car is in good running condition, preferably by a mechanic. With 2000 to spend, you can find one.

Get a Trading Post, it will list all kind of cars for 2K. You could also try the classified in the newspaper.

1000 should be enough to get u a piece of crap that runs for awhile. use the other 1000 for the inevitable maintenance fees.
