I had asked this question a little earlier but I may have not worded it correctly.
Notice on the first day that there was light, but it was not till the third day that the stars, moon, and Earth were created. What was the source of the light on the first day?

On the first day it is written as followed:
3 And God said, "Let there be light," and there was light. 4 God saw that the light was good, and He separated the light from the darkness. 5 God called the light "day," and the darkness he called "night." And there was evening, and there was morning—the first day.

Then on the Third day:

14 And God said, "Let there be lights in the expanse of the sky to separate the day from the night, and let them serve as signs to mark seasons and days and years, 15 and let them be lights in the expanse of the sky to give light on the earth." And it was so. 16 God made two great lights—the greater light to govern the day and the lesser light to govern the night. He also made the stars.

Thanks =)

The notion that the day and night are part of a 24-hour cycle, divided by light and dark came well after creation and is a product of the natural human desire to measure and catagorize his surroundings.

What the bible calls "day" in Genesis is not based on Human observation of celestial mechanics (we were not even around yet), but on God's personal division of time.

There is the light of God and spiritual light and the light of the sun and moon. The sun doesn't light the entire universe so the first light had to be some kind of luminous light creation that resides to enable the earth to function. I truly believe from reading the Bible that is what was created. Everything created was made-ready for man to be created. Almost as if everything God did was for us. God makes it clear in His Word that the earth is not dependent upon the sun, but upon Him. He and we are the light of the world. And only we, because He is in us. In Revelation God lets us know the sun and moon are not needed because He will light the world. This is all that I can offer you to answer your question. Genesis 1:3 and Genesis 1:16 are entirely different lights.

Check out this vs. in Revelation21:23(NKJV) "The city had no need of the sun or of the moon to shine in it for the glory of God illuminated it. The Lamb is its light."

Now look at this one:John 1:1-5 "In the beginning was the WORD, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2-He was in the beginning with God. 3-All things were made through Him, and without Him nothing was made that was made. 4-In Him was life, and the life was the light of men, 5- And the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend it."

I find your question to be possibly the BEST one I have found so far in this sight. My answer would be JESUS. He was with God in the beginning (note The Word) so therefore HE would have been the Light. Also HE is the Glory of God and The Lamb; John stated that The Lamb is the Light.

The scriptures do not reveal the exact source of the light, as it is not necessary knowledge for our salvation.

We don't know that the Earth was created in it's present location. It's entirely possible from our present knowledge that the Earth was created near God's Kingdom and was recieving light from there until it was moved to it's present location at some point during the creation process.

God is the Father of Light. He does not need the sun or moon. Light of God is so bright that you could not look at it.

It was from God himself. In Revelation, there is no sun or moon or stars, but there is light... and it comes from God.

Actually when he made light he made the concept of light. (remember that EVERYTHING had to be made from scratch) It was not till God made the stars that he made somthing to give off the light.
