The bottle is clear, yet when you buy it, you'd swear it was in a black bottle. It seems to have a much different taste as well. I'm just wondering what the difference is to the original recipe?

I believe that this kind of rum is supposed to have an "herbal" taste. I wouldn't be surprised if the colouring was artificial.

probably the way it was aged. different wood barrels can provide different colors and flavors.
