My 9 year old son Raymond has autism. A problem we have with him is that he has trouble talking, so he pinches, hits and sometimes bites to get people's attention. He goes to a special needs school, and therapy but there's nothing they can do to make him stop. He can talk, but says very little... didnt start talking till he was 4. Any others out there who have this problem or just can offer some advice and support? Thank you

Have you thought about PECS or some time of picture exchange system? Its great for kids who are not verbal or have poor verbal communication. I have also seen kids start talking more when they get to using PECS. I think it opens a door for them where when you present language as a visual then its more easily processed.
Sorry but what sucks is the school districts speech therapist should have been working on some type of augmentive communication a few years back. Honestly this is pitiful that he is 9 and havent done anything like this for him yet.
Ask the school for a speech eval with the options of PECS or assistive technolgy for other types of communication options.

Have you talked to your sons doctor? That would be a great place to start. If you dont like their answer, find another doctor. Also, The View just recently had a great episode on this topic. I would look them up online and see what suggestions they have. They had alot of knowledge on this issue. Maybe you could get a copy of this show, it would really help you. It also gave a bunch of places you can contact for support in & out of your area. Good luck to you.

My son has Asperger's Syndrome. We have not had any problems like the one you are experiencing but have you registered with any Autism support groups? They often know how to help with these issues , they have seen it before and you are not left feeling like you are trying to re invent the wheel.

have you tried using weighted vests and joint compressions to help him stay calm? I work with autistic teens with behavior management problems and that is one thing we do.
