I havnt been about to swallow comfortably for over a week. A bout an hour after I get to sleep I have to wake up and go to the sink because I have phelgm build up and it is so uncomfortable, and it hurts to cough and spit it. I also have the feeling like my tonsils are covered in sand-paper. They dont look all that inflamed or red. Also, with the phlegm, there is alot of mucus build up and (disgustingly) I blow it out of my nose but it is also dripping to the back of my throat, causing me to spit more. I havent been able to go the doctor, but does it should like an infection that needs antibiotics? I dont think I should go to the doctor if it just sounds a virus and will pass.

It sounds like my throat last time I had strep throat. It's important to go to the doctor for a diagnosis and probably for antibiotics.

A viral sore throat probably would not hurt as much as what you've described. If it is viral you won't get antibiotiics.

Break down and go see a doctor. You need to budget for doctor's appointments. They're not that expensive.

The reason you have to see a doctor is that strep throat can damage your heart valves permenantly -- leading sooner or later to a need for open heart surgery and possibly earlier death. Don't risk it.

And if it turns out to be strep throat and the first antibiotic they put you on doesn't work in a few days, insist on another antibiotic. I was put on Zithromax and suffered for 5 days with no relief, then the doctor didn't want to give me another antibiotic (claiming that Zithromax might still keep working). I appealed to another doctor who prescribed a penicillin-based antibiotic and I finally got relief.

It sounds like you have a sinus/throat infection. If it's still causing that much mucous after a week, I'd head for the doctor or ER to get their advice, and probably some antibiotics to help it clear up. Until you can get there, flushing the sinuses with saline and gargling with warm salty water may give you some relief.

Feel better soon!

Doctors, or at least the better ones, are not just there to prescribe, also they have the important job of giving advice and reassurance. Overall very few sore throats get much help from antibiotics, most are self limiting.(get better on their own),however you have left it for a good long time to get better and still have symptoms. I think at this time a check up seems very sensible.

A sore throat should not last that long. You might have Strep Throat, and you could be spreading it to others. Call your doctor's office.
