it has to be the jo for me. The bo staffs length gives it a larger range but lacks control. It's near to impossible to control a bo with one hand. A jo is much more creative and can encompass many different weapon techniques stabbing like a spear, striking like a sword and blocking like the larger bo. It allows for a much greater creativity and can either be used one or two handed with great ease. and at close range a bo is really unhandy the jo does not suffer this affliction

Hi there

Its got to be the Jo for me. The reason is because it's a compromise between the two. It gives you both close range and distance and is more manoeuvrable. The disadvantage is that it does not have the same weight as a Bo making the strikes less devastating. Another advantage is that the length of the jo is a similar length to a walking stick making its application hiden and more practical. However when performing Furi Kata (spinning the weapon) there isn't enough length to play with. lol. ;)

Jo... Consider that Miyomoto Musashi's only defeat was at the hands of an opponent who wielded a jo staff.

Jo staff approx 1.2 metres in length, i have used this type in Aikido, straight shaft .good weapon in the correct skillful hands. Bo Staff approx 1.8 metres in length, tapered shaft ,thicker in the middle, heavier than Jo but again very effective in right hands, used in Karate styles. good luck in your endevours. Terry

We are actually learning jo-do after our Iaido classes. I prefer the jo because I find it more manageable (length-wise) than the bo.

My answer is:

NONE OF THE ABOVE!

My weapon of preference is something that can be used on the street and that I can carry without question...

i.e.; THE CANE.

Not only is a cane something that can be carried without comment, the handle (doesn't matter whether you prefer a "J" cane or an "L" cane) has many uses for:
striking,
hooking,
tripping and
breaking.
.

If your opponent has a sword, then bo. It has a higher velocity, and speed , it also gives you distance, and if your attacker cant reach you, he cant hit you.
