The federal government has maintained that posession of marijuanna is a crime, a federal crime. Thus, even in states that have "legalized" marijuana, federal agents can still arrest you for it, and bring you up on charges for it.

California most definitely has "legalized" medical marijuana, but this only means that state, and local police do not arrest or prosecute people in possession of marijuanna if they have a doctor's prescription, and comply with certain guidelines... but federal agents can still arrest them, and have them tried in federal courts.

Interestingly enough, there's no provisions for people who grow, or distribute marijuanna to those folks who do have prescriptions, so anyone who is involved in these activities can still be arrested by any police officer.

I've heard a similar setup may exist in Arizona.
