Either he was just trying to make small talk, or he is interested in whether you have plans or not, because maybe he wants to hang out with you.

It means he wants to know what you're doing tonight (or whatever night). While I'm inclined to say it's basically a lax way of asking if you're busy because he'd like to take you out... it's not going to hurt to keep your head cool if it turns out he was just making small talk.
Chances are though, he likes you! :-)

Might be that he is interested in what you are doing so he could do it too or he might be interested in asking you out on a date.
Next time just tell him nothing just to see why he is asking.
