I'm one of those people who just can't say "no" to someone. This may be a good thing, but unfortunately in some cases, it's not! LOL..How can I kindly decline an offer to a friends house, sleepover, or social event that I really don't want to go to?

It's hard to get over being a "people pleaser", but it comes with maturity. You just have to realize that it's not good for YOU to always say yes. The trick is to just have a sentence ready in your head, and practice it to yourself. Then if the person persists, you are ready, and don't have to explain anymore. It feels strange at first, but once you get the hang of it, it gets easier, and you will feel better YOURSELF!

Don't answer right away, say you will get back to them (softens it a bit), say you have a prior commitment. whatever you do, do not go to some event that you really do not want to go to, a simple, "sorry, I can't make it" will do.

The only exception to this simple rule is funerals, they are NOT social events, they are obligations.

Tell them that you have family obligations that night, or you feel under the weather. My boss just called me a little bit ago and asked me to work tonight and I told her my husband and I were going out of town. A little white lie now and then doesn't hurt anyone.

I was like that until I realized that you simply can't make everyone happy. So, you need to make sure that your happiness comes first. So, if you don't want to do something just say...." I'm sorry, but I really can't. I have a previous engagement."

It's okay to say sorry, but you'd rather not. If it makes you feel better use an excuse but that shouldn't be necessary.

Let's pretend I am the guy asking. If you say it this way to me, I would understand.

"I am sorry I have a boyfriend or you can say I am sorry my parents wouldn't allow me.

Just say no

Say, thanks for the invite, but I really can't make it.

You don't owe anyone an explanation. You have the right to say no.
