I think it is a form of ":phonetic spelling" in which any sound could be replaced by a letter or number, instead of just by a symbol.

Leet.
It's a nickname for the word "Elite", but the language itself is called just Leet.
Also, you can use symbols, too. Ex. @ for "a"
