I haven't made enough money to file. For the first time in a long time I did this year. I'm afraid of getting audited. Is there anything I need to do to keep that from happening?

If you made under 35,000.00 you can call the IRS and ask where the nearest VITA site is. (Volunteer Income Tax Assistance)
Call 1-800-829-1040 They can electronically file your return for free.

Don't fret over it. If the earnings were reported correctly in all those years, they already know you didn't make enough to have to file.

I suggest you use a reputable tax firm to file this year, and check before filing to make sure they have audit assistance available. I know for a fact that H&R Block has a guarantee of audit assistance which will not cost any extra. Also, Block has an extended service agreement that you may want to purchase which guarantees representation if you are audited.

If you haven't had enough income to be required to file, you don't have to do anything. You are free to file tax returns for prior years if it makes you feel better. Any refunds from more that 3 years ago are lost.

What's the problem? If you didn't make enough to be required to file, then you're not in any trouble for not filing. And if this year you made enough to have to file, and did file showing all of your income for the year, you should be OK.

If you haven't been required to file before, you shouldn't worry about this. Assuming your employers reported your income accurately during all those years, the IRS knows how much you made. Relax.
