I was born with a clubed foot and have had several reconstructive surgeries on it. Now I'm 40 now and I am in constant pain form arthritis, scar tissue , nerve damage, bone spurs etc. I still work a 40+ hour week (on my feet) and the severity of the pain makes me sick. I take meds for swelling and pain but any dosage that gives me relief makes me groggy. I have seen 4 Dr.s and none will operate on it (too much deterioration and damage). I have no skills for a sit-down job and can't afford to quit work.(who can?). My employer has no short term disability or "light duty" work that will keep me off of my feet. What are my options???

Your doctor has to sign any paperwork for social security disability (SSI) so why not start with your primary care provider?
Sounds like you could not only qualify but also qualify for employment training by the state's office for disabilities.

Apparently you have already discussed your health issue with your employer, and they denied you "light duty". Have you been injured on the job? If you were injured on the job, had no other skills, you would qualify for vocational retraining. If you are working 40+hours a week, there is no way you will qualify for disability. You would need to not be able to work due to your disability in any capacity. That doesn't seem to fit you, so I think I would contact your human resources dept of where you work. Explain your situation and your value to the company, request they consider a vocational retraining, or ask how they can help you remain among the employed and not cost the company money in retraining. Your employment office should be able to offer suggestions as well. If you are protected by a union, that's all the better, contact your local and see what they offer.

Go directly to a lawyer that specializes in Social Security & Disabilities. Ask for the forms you'll need from the local department of Social Security. Don't fill in the application unless your lawyer tells you to so. Alot of lawyers like to have you fill them in front of them. I'd also have a statement from atleast 2 Dr.'s stating your physically unable to continue working. If you do it without a lawyer, you'll most likely be denied. It will be worth the 20% lawyers fee, believe me. You should not rule out a "mental disability" from all the stress & pain. Start calling in sick due to the pain. Marie

You should try to apply for disability. Also, go to your local rehabilitation office. They can also help you find a job and still get disability or some other form of assistance.
Just a question tho: Do you have Neurofibromatosis?
