It's Faust.

Faust is a traditional German story, most famously told by the playwright Goethe, in which a man, Faust, makes a deal with the Devil, Mephistopheles or Mephisto, in which the Devil is entirely at Faust's command, but if he ever reaches true happiness he dies and his soul belongs to the Devil. Faust reaches this in the end, but because of his supreme love, God intervenes and allows him to go to Heaven.

I don't know, but the following is the director's commentary on the movie, found from wikipedia - maybe it'll help:
Writer/Director Richard Kelly does not deny personal interpretations but has expressed his own theories through the extra commentary on the two DVDs, his own (fictional) book the Philosophy of Time Travel, and in various other interviews.

According to Kelly and his Philosophy of Time Travel, at midnight on October 2 a Tangent Universe branches off the Primary Universe around the time when Donnie is called out of his bedroom by Frank, immediately before the appearance of the Artifact, the errant jet engine. The inherently unstable Tangent Universe will collapse in just over 28 days and take the Primary Universe with it if not corrected. Closing the Tangent Universe is the duty of the Living Receiver, Donnie, who wields certain supernatural powers to help him in the task.

Those who have died/will die within the Tangent Universe are the Manipulated Dead (Frank and Gretchen). Manipulated Dead Frank at least is also given certain powers in that he is able to subtly understand what is happening and have the ability to contact and influence the Living Receiver via the Fourth Dimensional Construct (water). All others within the orbit of the Living Receiver are the Manipulated Living (e.g. Ms. Pomeroy, Dr. Monnitoff), subconsciously drawn to push him towards his destiny to close the Tangent Universe and, according to the Philosophy of Time Travel, die by the Artifact.

There are two "Franks" in the story: the living boyfriend of Donnie's sister Elizabeth, and the Manipulated Dead Frank who appears to Donnie as a premonition from the future in the disturbing rabbit suit (the second Frank is dead, or undead, for at the end of the film he is killed by Donnie). Dead Frank is aware of Donnie's fate and destiny, and thus has the ability to appear to Donnie via time travel and thus guide him.

This is what the movie is all about . . .

A divine dream occurrs in Donnie's head which tells him the future. This dream starts when Frank first calls Donnie outside and ends when Donnie is standing over the cliffside, watching the jet engine fall through the sky. In the last part of this special dream, Gretchen follows Donnie to a house. There, Gretchen is struck and killed by a car. It comes to a halt and out walks Frank himself! In anger, Donnie pulls out a gun (the same one he found in his parents' closet) and shoots Frank, killing him. We next see Donnie get into a car and drive out to a cliffside, where he observes a jet engine falling through the sky. This jet engine is the same one that would've killed him had Frank not called him outside earlier. We now see the events of the movie re-occurring in fast motion and backwards. The dream has ended, and Donnie wakes up in his bed. He realizes that he could leave his room and remain alive. However, this would result in Gretchen and Franks' deaths as Donnie is responsible for them. He also realizes that he could stay in his room and die, but in the process save them. Donnie decides to give up his life so that the others can live. None of the events that Donnie is responsible for in his dream actually take place in the real world.

Faust? I don't see any relation between the movie Donnie Darko and the myth of Faust and Mephistopheles.

Donnie darko has more to do the chaos theory and the butterfly effect, where if you go back to change something it changes your whole reality.

Faustus. Or Faust, for short. Sold his soul and made a pact with the devil.
