If knowledge is a good thing, then why would God make a command for mankind to not have it?

answers I won't take:
a) Because God doesn't exist. (without reasoning for this answer)
b) We're not meant to understand God's ways.

I can already come up with these answers myself and so could a toddler.

This question is not a portal of debate. It is a question. Answer your best.

Sorry for my bad english, it is not my native language, the reason was that God Gave to Adam an Eve that they can eat from all the fruits of the garden but that one and the Life tree (Genesis 2:8-9 and 16-17) he creates all the trees and the are supposed to obey him, it is very possible that later God will permit them to eat of that fruit when he decide it no when they want, it is like if your parents told you can not drive when you are 12 years but that does not mean that you never going to drive you will when you are 18 and responsible, the fruit maybe doesn´t have any kind of substance i dont know but represent the ability to know like a driver lincese it is a simple plastic card but represent the drive abilty and permit to use a car, you in the adan and eve case they has the option to obey or not God advice them they just have to follow instruction because they were like babies and God was the father that protect them the did not have everlasting life until they eat the life ´s fruit that was a simbol When i say symbol mean the the fruit that really exist both of them represent knowledge and everlasting life like a degree diploma it is a piece of paper that acknowledge that you have certain abilties and knowledge (i.e Lawyer, engineer etc) Jehovah Witness can explain better ask them next time you see them.

It is not just the tree of Knowledge but it is the tree of knowledge that represent good and evil. When God created Adam and Eve, they knew no sin, but after eating of the forbidden tree their eyes were open to ungodly things. They even realized they were naked. Remember Satan at this time was already kicked out of heaven. So evil did exist but we never would have known it if Adam and Eve would not have been disobedient. The reason they got kicked out of the garden was because it was another tree that was called the tree of life, if they would have ate off that tree too we would live forever in evil. God being a Holy God could not allow that therefore Adam and Eve were evicted. I hope I helped. It would have been better if we did not have the knowledge of evil. Look at our world today, this was not God's plan, although He knew it would happen because He gave His people free will but that is why He also gave us Jesus so we can be set free and one day start over and live in eternity. God Bless.

The couple had knowledge, they knew it was wrong to disobey. They did it anyway. The knowledge they received was experiential. They were to have trusted the Creator as their source of knowledge. Rather they chose to experience for themselves sickness and suffering. Just like the little child is to trust the parent when the parent says not to touch the hot stove. Is the parent attempting to keep something good from the child or is the parent protecting the child from injury ? The parent is attempting to keep the child from injury by saying not to touch the hot stove. Some children are going to touch the stove anyway, Adam and Eve are just such children. They thought that they could be the senior partner in the relationship between the Creator and mankind. Which is the anatomy of all sin.

Because, if you've ever read the Adam, and Eve part in the bible more then 10 times then, you'll see that before they ate that fruit, Adam and Eve had no idea that they were both NAKED. After eating the fruit they did find out. See, God wanted mankind to not have the knowledge of anything bad that happens. Such as having the knowledge that your friend has died. You wouldn't have the knowledge, but you would figure out that she was gone. You thought you would join her, once you found her. You would die and go to heaven, then see your friend. It was Eve's fault that there is hell. If she hadn't eaten that fruit , there wouldn't be hell.

First of all not all knowledge is 'good'.
Secondly God was conducting an experiment to see the result of his new-beings and how obedient they can be.
Thirdly, they were not ready for the content of the knowledge that was there even though it was for them. It had a time on which it sholud've been revealed.
Lastly there is a subliminal part to this story where man can only become god by disobeying god. In Gen-3:22 god said man became like one of us (gods/ elohim) but he only did this after he ate the fruit, which is what the serpent said would happen.

> Why did God say that Adam and Eve couldn't eat the fruit of the tree of knowledge?

God was a gardener. He didn't want his beloved people to know the things that the angels knew.

God telling Adam not to eat of the tree of knowledge had nothing to do with God not wanting Adam and Eve to have knowledge. It was because God wanted them to trust Him for everything and more importantly to obey Him. Solomon got his wisdom from God through prayer. Adam could have received knowledge the same way.

As a Muslim, I believe on Adam and Eve, and we also believe that both disobeyed God's instruction (It was not only Eve's fault). We believe that this was a fruit tree, but not a knowledge tree, since knowledge is considered as an obligation for every Muslims (the first sentence in the Co ran was:"read, read in the name of your Lord that created,etc...".
All this is stated in the Coran

I would hazard an educated guess. (whether he exists or not is not relevant to the question) To believe in the unbelievable you need faith. Knowledge on the other hand demands proof. It's kind of a safe guard against finding out what really is going on. For example the Greek Orthodox branch of Christianity has been plagued for centuries by the motto of "believe and do not reason" Same goes for the Catholics in similar terms. Knowledge is the enemy of belief/faith

God created human beings in his image. SinceGod distinguishes between right and wrong and makes moral choices, Adam and Eve too had to be given the opportunity to make a true moral choice. Otherwise they would have been puppets, not persons. God gave Adam and Eve the opportunity to make a true moral choice, he did not trick them into doing anything wrong. The day they ate of the tree, they also died spirituality,
morally, and phusical death started.
