It's so terrible. I wish we could get out of there. It's not benefitting anyone.

At first, it didn't matter to me. That was until I came back from meeting my inlaws in Pakistan in 2003. Here's what I posted in response to a friend's blog when he was talking about almost the same thing.

After seeing what I saw on Pakistani television and then seeing a different story about the same thing here, I no longer trust our media. I support our troops, but I don't trust our media anymore. I was in Pakistan when the war on Iraq began. I remember that clearly, because my father in law is obsessed with keeping CNN on the TV and wouldn't change the channel. They showed video footage of every single thing they were talking about. From Bush, to Blair, to Pervez, everything. I think it was a day or two into the war when a Blackhawk helicopter was brought down. I remember seeing on the television video footage of men running toward it and the camera man was struggling to keep the picture steady. They got the helicopter and the soldiers were alive. They pulled them out and took them to what looked like an office building or doctor's office of some sort. I didn't see the outside, but the inside had chairs like a doctor's waiting room. They were interviewing the soldiers, asking them their name and rank. Some of the soldiers were in fact eating. They were not being harmed, nobody was doing anything to them. I came back to the US a few days later, and that same story was on CNN. Except it said that the soldiers had been shot on sight. It said that their bodies, after being shot at the site of the crash, had been dragged through streets. I was both scared and angry at the same time, because I had seen the footage myself of the soldiers talking, albeit scared, but still talking. They were alive. They had not been shot. Now I get my news sources from elsewhere, and I have many friends all over the globe. If I see something questionable on TV, I just contact them and ask them about it.

The war in Afghanistan is the right war as Al-Qaeda came from Afghanistan. The war in Iraq however I ws never for as it was used more as a personal vendetta that George W. Bush had towards Saddam Hussein.

What about these images?

War is an ugly thing, but ultimately your apathy is uglier. It will cause the downfall of our society.

How's it going to look when it's YOUR child on a playground, suffocating from the chlorine gas that Al Qaeda is now using?

I was never for the war in the first place. War is the failure to achieve peace (not saying I'm a pacifist, I'm joining the army).

David: I don't need you to tell me to think my life through. There is a very big difference between believing that war is a good thing, and accepting that it is part of reality and you can help to make the situation better. Just for your information, I want to join the UN peacekeepers as I believe that they help to stop conflicts all over the world.

I never was for the war. Marched against it well before it started. Didn-t do much good, but at least I can look my kids in the eye, and will be able to look my grandkids in the eye, and say "I did what I could".

Om. You are not for war? But you are joining the army? Think it through. Get them before they get you.
