Well I must say I'm past the age of believing in myths. We don't need to get into detail on how Mohammed flew in a horse or was it donkey, at night, from the place he lived to Jerusalem and to Heaven to face Allah. But seriously I still like to know how Muslims know this for sure and where they get the backup on this.
History tells us In or around 711, or about 80 years after Muhammad died, Malik's son, Abd El-Wahd - who ruled from 705-715 - renovated the Church of St. Mary and converted it into a mosque. He left the structure as it was, a typical Byzantine {Eastern Roman Empire} "basilica" structure with a row of pillars with corridors on either side of the rectangular "ship" in the centre {A typical church building design}. All he did was some cosmetic renovations, removed Christian items and replaced the Christian stained glasses. He then named it Al-Aqsa
Quran 17:1 carried his servant by night from the Inviolable place of worship [Mecca] to the far distant place of worship

@E.T. you are missing the point completly. Who care's if someone believes in a flying horse? My children did this too, although they have grown out of that.

This ‘far distant place’ could mean anywhere on earth, couldn’t it? It doesn’t even mention a mosque, does it? If Muhammad was already dead, then to whom did Allah reveal this sura?

There are many historical contradictions in the Isra'a. One more question - how come god talks about Msjid Aqsa qhile there was no mosque or even a single Muslim around the area by the time that verse was (supposed to be) revealed?

listen.....even believing in God seems like a fairy tail sometimes. If you can believe that why not believe in flying horses or whatever. It seems silly because of the whole unicorn thing but really when you think about it, a lot of things in other religion also feel so silly. Even what christians believe--that God had a son who came down to die in order to save everyone from their sins seems silly! but it doesn't to christians. Faith is faith you either have it or you dont. If you think islam is false, its fine but you are wasting your time if you think you are going to change anyone's mind about what they believe. miracles cant be rationalized or else they would no longer be miracles. I cant blindly believe anything because i'm naturally skeptical about everything but I have enough reason to believe in islam completely.

well Alaqsa mosque has it owen value to Muslums from different reasons, first it is the reason you have mentioned,Mohamed was rosed to Allah,it was a miracle,as Jesus christ was rose too.For what you have said about the mosque, well all churchs are perfectlly keept untill these days, some were destroied but not by the hands of Muslums becouse Mohamed ordered not to touch or destroy any of them,so you are mistaken.I live in gaza, where Muslums and Chrestians live so peacfully.

Debunking Islam is like tripping a blind man. What we should be trying to do is find out why seeminly intelligent people choose to belive obviously flawed doctrine. This isn't directed solely at Muslim's all major religions seem to have this same problem.

Faith on the other hand is another matter.

When the Muslim leader Omar met with Church leaders in Jerusalem he was asked by them to pray in the Church but he refused because he told them i do not want ppl after me to take your church and make it Mousq.
"Say: we believe in God and in what has been revealed to us, and what was revealed to Abraham, Isma'il: Isaac, Jacob and The Tribes, and in (the Books) given to Moses, Jesus and the Prophets, from their Lord: We make no distinction between one and another, among them, and to God do we bow our will (in Islam)."
