body composition is a direct reflection of insulin sensitivity.

when insulin sensitivity is high the body is lean when it is low the body is fat. once the body is in fat storage mode it is easier to gain more weight even with the same caloric intake. when the body is in fat storage mode more nutrients will get shuttled into fat cells then in muscle cells.

when the muscles are properly exercises and insulin sensitivity starts to increase, more nutrients will get shuttled into muscle cells for use. to lose body fat you have to exercise the muscles sufficiently. when the body is at "rest", office work, light house work, walking, sleeping, etc. the main energy source of the muscle cells are free fatty acids. so when you increase the metabolic rate you increase the rate at which muscle cells will oxidize free fatty acids for energy.
