Hi, Can I just ask when I am on the running machine at the gym and I am in the "cardio training heart rate zone" that is 158 B.P.M for my age am I also fat burning as well. It is just the ideal fat burning heart rate is only 120 B.P.M for my age. It seems like I am not doing any exercise when I set the machine to "fat burn" Thank you.

if you are "healthy" (no heart problems, etc.) besides needing to drop some body fat then long duration low intensity cardio is a waste of time. doing cardio in the "fat burning" zone is outdated and provides less than optimum results. if you want to burn more fat in less time then start doing high intensity interval training such as:

HIIT Cardio

Max-OT Cardio

* you also have to realize that cardio machines use statistical data using the height/weight like the BMI. it does not take into account body composition. a person with higher than average amounts of lean body mass will not get accurate readings from the calculations.

Yes you are burning fat, as long as you can sustain this pace for at least 10 minutes, any exercise that lasts longer than 10 minutes will have an effective fat burning responce as well as improving cardio performance, the reason i say 10 minutes minimum is because before this time other energy systems which dont use fat as a source of energy are more prominant therefore you need to do at least 10 minutes to target the fat burning system. the guides the machines at the gym use are very vague and are ment for a guide only, the fact is any sustained exercise will result in reduced fat %.
