A teenager these days? The generation in schools now has it worse than anyone else ever had in the last century. There's nothing wrong with being antisocial or serious.

Mind training that aims at reduction of our self is key -- the self judges, compares, and seeks special identity. It even grasps onto the identity of being a spiritual person who is 'seeking to reduce their ego'. It's all self stuff -- we all have it. The more we chip away at it and don't think of ourselves as special but, instead, as ordinary and the same as everyone and everything else, we're better off. If we go inside and view ourselves as serious, brooding, different, special, more introspective, etc., chances are we're indulging our desire for self identity. If we can stand back from that and watch what we're doing without judgement, we'll get huge gains. Some practices that help: mindfulness, zen, a course in miracles.

Because you are spirit soul, not the body. Whatever you have is for the pleasure of the body only, not for the soul, you. This body is like a cage, and a bird inside, we are so much concern about the cage, cleaning, decorating, but we forget to feed the bird inside, the soul, us, therefore we never are fully satisfied.

Hanging out on this site and taking a look at the current state of this world has done it for me. I keep hoping that there is something better beyond this body's lifespan and that hope is in Jesus the Christ cause nothing else comes close to everything that he brought to us. ex Utopian hippy surfer now disillusioned. Peace to you

I think you were probably someone who had to mature quickly. This is probably what makes you so serious. You probably feel like you have a lot of things, but you missed out on someting (your teenage years) that you can never get back. I understand if this is the case.

Dreamer ... I won't give you one of my multi-page answers, but in the interest of brevity, I'd also recommend starting with a higher faith. Maybe it will be Jesus ... Maybe something or someone else.

But if you're looking for real satisfaction in things like getting your nails done, having the biggest TV in your whole neighborhood, or letting yourself be impressed by the latest fad, each of these paths is really a road to nowhere.

Please ... no religion here ... I'm not telling you to get on your knees to pray. But look inward AND look outward, but don't waste your time with those "flash-in-the-pan fads." They don't impress me and I can see you're too smart to be impressed by them, too.

Good luck, Dreamer. You're already headed in a better direction.

Apparently you have attachments and grasping to the wrong view that such things will bring you happiness, when you obviously are finding out that they don't. Cultivating correct view about things (impermanence, things change, and nothing is inherently existent, including concepts and emotions) might bring you some peace of mind. Check out Buddhism... you don't have to become Buddhist to gain benefit from the logic.

I was so glad once I got out of my teenage years, they were the worst. It is hard to be a teenager. Age 20 is a lot better.

Lots of people feel that way. You aren't alone.
I suggest you start by talking to your family healthcare provider.
