Puppy mills, from people who let their dogs breed with no concern what will happen to them once they sell them to the pet shops because no breeder with any pride in their pups would ever sell their pups to a pet shop!!!

99% of the time they come from backyard breeder/puppy mills who have very unfavorable conditions.
Take my dog for example. She was bought from a reputable breeder and has a good lineage (parents both have Ch. titles) by someone who intended on selling her litter to pet stores and such... they only wanted her for breeding. Well, turns out her first litter had a genetic disorder that she is the carrier of, so more than likely all of her puppies would have had it. So this owner took her to the vet to be EUTHANIZED! They were going to put her down because she wasn't a money maker for them! That's how these back yard breeders work! They don't care about dogs, they're just a source of income for them!
THANK GOD the vet wouldn't do it and she got placed with a resuce organization and I got her!! YAY! She's is the best, sweetest, most well behaved dog EVER... I can't believe she was almost murdered because her puppies were sickly...
If you want a dog, ADOPT! There are so many wonderful homeless pets available! Avoid pet store puppies like the plague!
Of course reputable breeders are good too. They serve to continue healthy lineages making sure that the breeds don't become extinct. But I think you should first consider adoption.

Most pups that you will see in a pet store come from puppy mills or backyard breeders. If a reputable breeder belongs to the parent club of their breed, then you will not see any of their pups in a pet store. Also there are pet stores that go out and pick up mixed breed litters. They take a guess at the cross and slap a huge price on a pup. In my state we are working on getting a bill passed that will not allow pet stores in the state to get any pets from out of state to sell in their store! You will rarely see an AKC pup in a pet store now a days. If you do, it most likely came from a BYB. I actually purchased a dog from a person years ago. He had never registered her. They bought this dog from Uncle Bill's. She had an incredible pedigree. She came from a puppy miller in Missouri, was sold to a broker then sold to the pet store.
Go to ItsJustPuppyLove.com like that poster above is telling you to and he says it is his store. He is adding to the problem by selling these mixed breed dogs, mutts!! You can look at all the poodle crosses he has for sale in his store. Oh, great guarantee by the way. Basically no guarantee at all.

Pet shop puppies come from commercial breeders (puppy mills)or are the leftovers from litters that small breeders cant get rid of.
Buy your dog from a hobby breeder. You get a better dog for the same money or less. Its been properly treated, socialized and will be a better pet.

Puppy mills (notice most papers will say they are from Kansas, Missourri or Pennsylvania - big puppy mill areas) or local backyard breeders. That is the newer trend - so they can say 'We only deal with local breeders we KNOW, not puppy mills".
I can tell you: they are not any better. They may not have as many dogs or treat them as badly as puppy mills, but genetic quality is still poor (no testing for hip dysplasia, progressive retinal atrophy, etc - & will still breed even KNOWING their dog has such hereditary defects) & they will breed every/nearly every heat.
It is always best to deal with a breeder that belongs to the breed's club & adheres to it's code of ethics. No REPUTABLE breeder sells through 3rd parties: they want to meet, interview & know to whom & where their carefully bred pups are going - for life.
p.s. I see further down a pet store owner saying just what I had already mentioned: Puh-lease! Again, a reputable breeder would not breed if they did not have the time to carefully place each pup, and does not consider the time taken to screen each potential owner an 'aggrevation'! Would any truly responsible, caring breeder let a living creature go to just any random person for only monetary gain, not ever knowing what fate awaited them? Any intelligent, compassionate person knows the answer to that.

The majority of pet shop puppies come from large puppy mill corporations such as the Hunte Corporation, who regard dogs as nothing but breeding stock.

Some pet shops, in the smaller towns get the puppies from local backyard breeders. You may actually get a nice puppy from them, but chances are slim..However, the vast majority of them come from puppy mills. These are farms that raise 100's of puppies at a time, with very little care as to quality, or socializing, or good health..To buy a puppy from them is to finance their despicable business..
When you see the puppy you can't resist, ask to see its papers, and the papers will have the breeder's address on them..You can know in a minute if it is a local dog, that just 'may' be ok, or from out of the area, in which case you would be buying a heartache..
You would do better to go to a site such as http://search.petfinder.com/search/search.cgi?offset=8&zone=5&limit=25&zip=97415&breed=&animal=Dog&age=Baby&size=M&tmpl=&lat=42.065&long=-124.2739&preview=1#
and put in your own zip code to find the puppies in your area that REALLY need you..
If you are not familiar with puppy mills, check out this website for an eye opener> http://www.prisonersofgreed.org/

80 % of them from puppy mills, you really shouldn't buy from pet stores, you will usually be sorry! You will perpetuate the need for puppy mills by buying them and you will usually wind up with extremely inbred or sick pups. I hate to admit it but I sold animals in a pet store at the start of my career because I didn't know any better, but as soon as I learned I was out of there! You would not like to see the condition these little 8 wk old pups are in when they come off a plane in the carriers, some are dead, 95% dehydrated and overheated, sick, anemic, or hiding hereditery defects.

1.) Puppy mills
2.) Puppy brokers (person who buys from mills & sells to shops)
3.) Crappy breeders out for a quick buck
4.) Irresponsible owners (who don't spay/neuter)
No good breeder sells to a pet store, no matter what the pet store owners say.
Good breeders want to know where there pups are going, and want to educate owners.
