There's no such thing as a "friendly breed", just as there is no such thing as a "vicious" breed.
A dog's temperament is determined by both genetics as well as how the dog is raised and handled.
What I mean by genetics is, some behavior can be genetic in a dog, such as weak nerves or fear based aggression. A good breeder would never breed such a dog because of the risk that it would produce weak nerved puppies who may be aggressive toward people. Good breeders only breed dogs with stable temperaments and good nerves.
Even a good nerved dog can be ruined by an owner that is abusive and neglectful, however. So you should understand when you get any dog that your behavior plays a big role in the behavior of your dog, and how you train and socialize your dog plays an important role as well. Every dog should be well socialized with a large variety of different people - taking the dog with you when you go places helps accomplish that.
German Shepherds, when bred and raised properly, can be some of the sweetest dogs in the world. Mine loves to give doggy kisses to little children. On the same hand, a cute little dog like a Chihuahua can be a vicious biter. It all comes down to breeding and handling.
Also... since a lot of people suggested Labradors and Goldens - did you know that those breeds account for the majority of dog bites in the United States each year? The reason for that is that people think "It's a Lab, it must be friendly..."

Any dog can be friendly if trained the right way. You have to do you homework on the breeds you are looking at. Every dog need different exercise requirements, more training and so on. Always look for a good breeder. I was start with AKC. They can help find a breeder. It might cost more to go to a good breeder but you will have a healthier dog and better temperaments.

Many dogs can be friendly if they are bred well, have been socialized and cared for correctly from young puppies and are trained.
However some breeds are more 'snappy' and agressive than others by nature. Golden Retrievers are very gentle dogs, and are extremely loyal.
Good luck with your search.

If you want a large dog you can't beat a Northern Inuit mine is unbelivable with kids and other dogs, If they are from a reputable breeder they are bred for temperament. But you can get good and bad in all breeds so be careful and do as much research as possible and talk to owners and breeders 1st. Crufts is coming and its really good for info.

Every dog has the potential to bite someone. Especially if it feels threatened or feels like its protecting you or "its territory". Try the link below which has you answer a few questions to help you pick the right breed for you. Good Luck! :)

Most dogs will be friendly if well trained but if you want a dog that likes everyone I recommend a Bearded Collie.

I recon that one of the most friendly breeds are bearded collies, they are good with children, adults and other dogs, they are easy to train, calm, easy going and very affectionate. Their average life span cn be up to 18 years old. They are very placid dogs but are not keen on loud noises or noisy homes. Try the bearded collie rescue society, or for local breeders in your area.
