Yeah, PetSmart is great for obedience training. I started my puppy in the puppy kindergarten when she was about four months. Then we took the intermediate course and now she is about 10 months old and I'm almost done with the advanced. My dog absolutely loves it and I really enjoy going too. It's a great way to socialize your dog. I have a jack russell and she has learned a lot--even though she still needs to work on a lot of stuff. My dog tends to want to play with the other dogs more than she wants to pay attention in class....but its a great experience. You really have to be commited at home as well. Going for an hour a week is not going to help, you have to spend a little time practicing what you learned in class each day. The instructor gives out paperwork each week to guide you with the training. I would highly recommend it.

Most Petsmart stores offer obedience classes - you should go to your local store and ask for a schedule of classes and also whether you can observe a class prior to signing up.

Personally, I would never train at my local Petsmart.

Their "training" area is a small cubicle by the front of the store, which doesn't really have much room to accommodate dogs and owners. When you have lots of dogs in a small space, you're just asking for conflict.

Much of the actual "training" takes place in the aisles of the store. During the "learning" phase of a new command, this environment is much too distracting - lots of things to smell, toys hanging around, people walking by, etc. Training gets interrupted by shoppers and their dogs cutting through to get their shopping done (shoppers' dogs may not always be friendly, either!) and I would have some serious health concerns as well since shoppers' don't have to have proof their dog is healthy and has been vaccinated before brining it to the store to let it mingle with dogs that are in training.

If you're serious about training, I would try to find an actual training facility to go to rather than your local Petsmart.

Also, make sure that your trainers are certified by the Association of Pet Dog Trainers (APDT), and not just store employees who've taken a brief training course.

If you are talking about the 'national chain' stores called PetSmart, then yes, they usually do have 'obedience classes for dogs' ... try calling the closest one to where you live and asking them, and finding out the schedule. And you have a five month old shitzu or shi tzu, not a 'schitzu' ...

Petsmart has a great Puppy Kindergarten class for your pup. My 7 month old Bichonpoo just completed the class. She learned all kinds of basic obedience commands. She learned to socialize with other dogs and their owners. She learned to perform her commands with distractions which is great because in the real world there will be distractions. She is a much better behaved puppy after completing the Puppy Kindergarten class. I am going to enroll her in more advanced training at Petsmart.
