I have a parakeet who once belonged to a friend of mine. She got scaly face while she was still in my friend's possesion. Unfortunately, by the time we figured out what it was, her face was already horribly disfigured. She now bears what look like scars all around her beak and her cere. The trouble is that it seems like the mites have never gone away- I continue to have to Vaseline her face after almost four years. It will seem like it's gone, but then it comes back a month or so later. Luckily, my male hasn't contracted the mites (I know scaly face isn't contagious). Is there anything else to do for scaly face? Something to do so she doesn't look quite so bad? All the vets have said have been the Vaseline treatment.

So, so wrong!!!!! Stop the vaseline immediently! It is not healthy for them!

Seperate the male and the female until this is cleared up!

Now you need to find an AVIAN VET! Not just a regular vet. Go to http://www.aav.org/vet-lookup/

That will be your BEST resource in finding a vet that can really help when it comes to the disfigurement and professional treatment. What you have had up till now is deplorable!

If you don't find someone there, email me and I can give you a link that has a mite treatment for birds. I have safely used it, but in a case like yours I reccomend professional help.

To treat Scaley Face is very simple. There are many methods on the market. The simplest is to rub Vaseline onto the cere and legs of the budgerigar. This suffocates the mite and most of the problem is solved. The treatment should be kept up for a full week as the mite lays eggs and they will be hatching all of the time.If your bird has a real bad case of Scaley face,it may be worth seeing a vet. Now that the cure has been applied to your bird a thorough clean of your cage is necessary. All wood should be thoroughly cleaned with an appropriate disinfectant.

Well, I don't know what else to do. My bird had the same thing, and Vaseline worked!
Try going to the vet again.
