You really don't state your requirements, market or price range so its very hard to make a recommendation. Typically the Japaneese brands are considered to be the most reliable. Lately Hyundai has also been getting very good reviews and scores on reliability.

As far as SUVs go, most people that have them don't need them. They get worse gas milage than cars. They don't always carry that much more cargo than a decent wagon. They don't have more seatting room (3rd row won't fit adults). On the whole they are more dangerous than passenger cars due to handling, weight and their general construction.

If you could clarify your needs such as passenger capacity, climate, size, budget restrictions, etc. then it would be easier to give specific answers.

Go car-based, or get a minivan.

I say get a Subaru Forester. Excellent, reliable cars. They handle well, they're safe, and they get in the high 20s highway. (Mid 20s if you get the XT...which is as fast as most sports cars)

Check Consumer Reports They are not supported by advertising. They test several cars each year. What may be my choice someone else may not like... There are lots of lemons out there.

As long as you don't need to offroad, I'd get a Honda CR-V. Check out this article at Motor Trend.
