Also sometimes when I eat, laugh or smile my jaw tenses on one side. And it's painful. Does anyone know what this is? Or why it happens.

Well there are several things that could be contributing to this.

If you have any extra weight around you neck, the ear area could be crowded and squeezing the joint.

Temporal-Mandibular Joint syndrome.

The beginning of Tinnitus.

There is a simple $20.night guard that you can wear when you are sleeping. I got mine at Walmart and it improved my jaw problems considerably.

Research your family for hearing complications and deafness.
The beginning of Menneres.

GOOD LUCK.

Take the advice of the others..it is definately TMJ (tempera mandible joint) it can radiate down to your shoulders, neck. It can become very painful but very treatable. Go see the dentist.

I'm a dentist.

The temporomandibular joint (TMJ) is located just in front of the external auditory meatus (ear canal) in your skull. Noises from the joints will be readily audible to you.

I suggest you see your dentist.

probably TMJ, you can wear an appliance at night to force your jaw into rest position, it is a nightguard, that will minimize any squeaking, or discomfort during the day
