I just turned 21 about a week ago and the other day I tried to buy Sangria at a restaurant, but they would not accept a US passport as a valid id. (Saying that it could be my sister) I think this is dumb. The government says that I am who I am more than any State ID, but I was wondering is this true that most places won’t accept a US Passport as an ID?

the passport is a valid id, you shouldn't have any problem. you may want to carry some sort of back-up id with your name on it just in case someone gives you a hard time (like a school id or the temp license the dmv gave you).

Depends where you are at. It is a legal form of ID, and they can use it to determine if you are over 21, but they can choose not to. I live in a college town and they dont' take passports here.

Not all states have strips to scan drivers licenses', but most do, so thats their number 1 way of telling if the id is even real. Then they determine if its you or not. You can't swipe a passport in their reader.
One bar here snaps a pic of you the first time you go there (based on if your ID is in their computer). THen everytime they swipe your license your pic shows up. So the bar does really work.

Its also harder in the end for a bouncer or server to tell if the passport is fake or not. Not enough people use their passports as id's for them to be able to determine if they are fakes.

Also, in my home town, some gas stations stopped taking passports too for smokes. There, they scan your id in their register. I left my wallet at school once and had to get someone else to buy my cigs cuz they rejected my passport.

A passport is a like the best form of id. You can use it for anything, when I lost my license I used a passport to go to the club every week until I got the license from the DMV. And buy alcohol and cigarettes. That's ridiculous about the restaurant. The idiot waitress/waiter probably didn't know what a passport was.

Yes you can, but hold on tightly to it-u dont want anyone to steal it. If u can just use a driver's license, state ID or college ID- u should but if ur passport is all you have, then use it.

I've seen people by ciggarettes and alcohol with a passport before. They should be able to accept anything you have with a photo of yourself and your birthday. That's silly.
