Sometimes when I have been sitting for a long period of time my thigh starts to twitch and only stops when I stand up and walk. Other times when I am sleeping or about to fall asleep my lower leg will just kind of randomly twitch, but only once. Has this happened to anyone else? What could it be?

hey Jenna!

this is going to sound so silly but just give it a go.
I've suffered from exactly the same thing since i was a teenager and a Friend of mine gave me some advice which sounded so pathetic i almost hit him, but it works and its free
just elevate your legs onto the wall behind your headboard for about ten minutes as soon as you get into bed. this will let the blood in your legs have chance to flow back to its norm. I'm told that its a circulation problem, but don't worry yourself, like i said, i had it in my teens. just make sure you keep them at 45 degrees.
i know it sounds so stupid but trust me it works!

~Good Luck!~

It could be just a spasm too from staying in one position too long but to be on the safe side I would talk to a dr to see if your potassium levels are low and possibly look in to restless leg syndrome as the other poster suggested.
