Have these breeder's been inspected by the AKC, or do these breeders pay for this listing? Does the AKC have certain standards that these breeders must adhere to?

In short, how do I know that these breeders are more responsible than ones who aren't listed?

No Kennel club actually looks into the breeders practices or home. Many Kennel clubs will check out a breeder AFTER there has been some problem lodged with them, usually it takes several complaints before a bad breeder is removed from the ability to breed register with that Kennel Club. The ONLY way to discover who is a GOOD breeder and who is a BAD breeder is by doing several things yourself.

1) visit the breeders location and check out the facility yourself, ask to see the puppies and the parents. If the breeder declines this request, they have something to hide.

2) ask if there has been ANY health problems with the parents, get their vets name and double check if they allow it. Of BIG importance, if wanting a pure bred dog, is if the breeder is willing to allow DNA testing on your dog. If you ask them if they have a problem with you verifying the DNA, and they get upset by it, chances are the dog has some problems.

3) do some research on your own as far as breed standards etc before you visit. This will give you an idea of what the parents and puppies SHOULD look like. If they do not, there is a problem.

Remember, ANY Kennel club can have bad breeders and good breeders. The only way to find out is to make it as personal as if you were picking out your own child. After all, pets are like children, and need us to care for them, protect them and love them.

All the breeders who are listed on the AKC site pay to have their name on the list. They also have their kennels inspected but all AKC kennels have an inspection from time to time.
The chances of you getting a puppy from any of the breeders listed on that list are slim to none. These are the top breeders in the area in which you live and they are not interested in selling any of their pups to regular every day people. Their pups or litter are very few and far between because they are concentrating on showing their dogs or winning titles. So Ask your vet for a good referral to a breeder in your area for the kind of dog you want.

I personally was never interested in showing any of my dogs and I refused to sell to anyone from another kennel. I bred my dogs to go to family's for a lifelong friend and companion or for therapy dogs.
In 29 years of breeding I have only had a inspector form AKC come to see my kennels, and that was when I was first getting started. Not because I have any complaints but because I was a nubie.

No, breeders that have a classified ad on the AKC site are not inspected. They just need to be AKC litters. The only way to ensure you are dealing with a reputable/responsible breeder is go to their home. See where the dogs are kept, puppies are whelped, temp. of the dog, health testing information...etc....

Anyone with an AKC registered dog can place a classified ad on the AKC site.

No they aren't inspected by AKC (actually having a kennel inspected by AKC is not a good thing..it means there has been complaints about the breeder or if their paperwork is in question. It makes no difference if you are new to breeding or have been doing it for years.) The breeders on the AKC may be good or may not..a person has to research them just as closely as any breeder anywhere.

The very best place to find a good breeder is to go to AKC.org and get the website for the National club for the breed you are looking into. At the National club they will have a list of breeders around the country. These are not puppy mills, they are breeders that are concerned with the health and improving their breed.

I recommend that you look on the AKC site for breed specific clubs and organizations in your area. Contact your local organization and they can give you the real scoop on reputable breeders in your area. Also, the ones to avoid.
