Because Christians typically believe that they would be putting their child's spiritual life in danger by not teaching them about God. It may seem like a foreign idea to you and me, but you have to consider their point of view in this situation.

I would never make a child take a stance on religion. I'd not even make the child follow my beliefs but give them the information they want when they ask for it and let them find the path that is right for them. People shouldn't be subjected to and made to adhere to another's belief when they are young.

I expect my children to take a stand on politics. I refuse to let them be mindless sheep. We will talk politics and religion and I will teach them to stand up for and vote for what they believe in. (Stand for something or you'll fall for anything.) And when the revolution come they will lead it.

my kids are free to choose their own religion. they are not wandering around making decisions without guidance like one poster was afraid of. we are pagan. we go to pagan rituals. my kids also go to christian sunday school sometimes with their friends, and i had tried to enroll my son in catholic school when he was young but neither parent was catholic so they didn't take him. my step dad is mormon and we have some chinese friends who share their traditions. my son's best friend of 9 yrs is jewish. how's that for diverse?!?! even within paganism there are many different paths they can take - wicca, asatru, druidism, etc. my job is to educate my kids (age 9, 12, 14) enough for them to make their own decisions on everytyhing, including religion. hope this answers your question!
