You can't. Only the cow and the milk processors can do that. However, you can do this:

For each 1 cup buttermilk called for in a recipe, use 1 cup plain yogurt or sour cream;

OR

1 tablespoon lemon juice or vinegar plus enough milk to make 1 cup;

OR

1 cup milk plus 1 3/4 tablespoons cream of tartar;

OR

1/4 cup buttermilk powder and 1 cup water.

Its pretty easy! Just get thickened cream, beat it until cream turns really lumpy-takes about 6 minutes and then put lumpy cream and liquid into a drainer and drain out the liquid (which is buutermilk) into a bowl. That is REAL buttermilk!! The lumpy cream is butter.

You have received the right answers, but to take it a bit further...I always use the milk and vinegar substitute, but remember to let it sit about 6-10 minutes until the milk 'clots' , then it is ready to use.
Whatcha makin' ??

You can add vinegar or lemon juice to regular milk. Check out the following links for correct measurements and procedure.
