Personally, I don't think we will see a World War that could be compared to either WWl or WWll. What I perceive is that what we are seeing in Iraq and Afganistan, and what happened in Bosnia and The Balkans are precursors of what we can expect. Future conflicts will no doubt be instigated by the lesser, more unstable countries; a strong probability being in the Middle East. Countries lead by fanatical despots, power hungry maniacs are more likely to ignite a conflict than a major nation, who have much more at stake. Also a consideration is how a culture views the value of life. There are many contingencies, but anyone who decides to take on the world will lose big time; unfortunately there would ultimately be no winner. If you think about it, is there a predictable "winner" in the current state of the world?

This is a fascinating question because in order to answer it, one must assume wars can be won or lost.

War is an armed conflict between two or more nations. Presumably all of the countries involved in a hypothetical "third world war" would have their own national interests. Each country fighting would have independent goals.

Often countries with SIMILAR interests band together as allies (as happened in WWI and WWII). In this case, the allied countries have agreed that SOME or most of their interests, goals or desired outcomes are the same. All the same? Hardly!

So: What is "winning?" Most would agree that to win a war, whatever outcome you had in mind at the beginning of hostilities would have to be accomplished. You don't mention in your question what country "we" is, but I believe if the U.S. were drawn into a major conflict with multiple enemies and multiple allies, nobody would win.

The war would be long, bloody and ugly (as all wars are). Many would die. In the end, some nations would meet their objectives (in part) and some would not. This is also true in all wars.

I sincerely hope and pray that weapons of mass destruction (Nuclear, Chemical, Biological, Radiological, etc.) would not be employed. If they were, everyone involved would most surely lose.

Heaven help us if there is a 3rd WW! No one will win, it would be total destruction of the world! Too many powers have nuclear weapons for them not to be used, once started on that trip, there would be no coming back.

The most likely contenders are the USA, Australia, some of Europe and maybe Israel on one side, and the new alliance of Russia, China and India on the other.
The flashpoint would probably be Iran.
If it came to it, Russia/India/China would win, as they will be more able to absorb a nuclear attack. But hopefully it won't come to that.

I think Iran plans to take care of UK and USA and Israel and anyone else that stands in their way of making the world Islamic.

Because they have oil, other nations will cowtow to them.
