that I won't bring a shelter dog home? I am going to put in a volunteer application in at a humane society but they are afraid I am going to bring all of the dogs home. I absolutely love dogs and am thinking about working with them as a career. That is the reason I want to work at the humane society. They are adamant that it will hurt me because I will feel so sorry for the animals and won't be able to leave them. Please help!!!

prior to you bringing a dog home, most shelters require that you fill out an application. on that application, it will ask if you live at home, rent, or own your own home. and if you are under age, they will require that your guardian sign the paperwork.

if this is your passion, to work with animals, then this is the best way to see first hand at what happens to animals that are neglected or given up for adoption for one reason or another. this is also a great place to see what you will need to study for in your college days.

THEN DON'T VOLUNTEER THERE! Why don't you become a local dogwalker instead? If you are going to be emotionally attached, the shelter isn't for you. Seeing a dog everyday and bonding on a walk is going to be a lot less heartbreaking. And you'll be paid!

~EDIT~

Somebody slap me...didn't read that very well. Just turn in the application, go a couple times, and SHOW them that you won't bring a dog home!

Assuming you are underage, as you need your parents permission to work at the shelter, you will not be eligible for adoption without their permission.

It's commendable that you are working toward a career of interest. While its hard to work in a shelter, because of all the sad, homeless animals, it is also the most rewarding work a person can do.

Good Luck to you, keep at them. If you really want it, eventually they will succumb to your determination.

Perhaps you could have one of the administrators of the shelter give a call to your parents to help ease their concerns.

tell them to let you try it out, and the first time you ask to bring a puppy home and your parents don't think your ready, then you have to find a different animal working environment, one where you don't have the opportunity to take an animal home... or... don't even put yourself in that position and skip straight to a different volunteer opportunity, i like the suggestion of being a local dog walker.

Just a few thoughts.. As wonderful as it is to give the dog a home, you are going to be leaving for college in a few short years. You can't have a dog live in your dorm, and even if you get an apartment your Sophomore year, you will have roommates to consider, a heavy class load and most likely, a job. This leaves your parents with the responsibility for YOUR dog.

I am an animal lover myself and wanted to be a vet for the longest time. I even volunteered at the vet for a while and loved it. Just tell them that you want to have a career with animals and this will help you gain experience.

If you live with your parents, a shelter is not going to allow you to take a pet home without your parents' permission. They have strict adoption policies. Typically, if you do not own your home, you have to bring permission from the owner of the home (with all the owners' contact info so they can follow up) as well as a utility bill with your name on it.

well, will you be able to leave them?
that is the question you have to ask yourself. if you can, tell your parents you are responsible and you promise you won't take a dog home.
