Its easier to buy both, one for your foot, and one for your prosthetic limb. The club for exchanging shoes still exists, though it is primarily for slippers, and since you can now buy ambidextrous slippers, there is no reason to do this, as few have the same taste in clothes as you do.
Your prosthetic limb is moulded from you old foot, if it is not too mangled, before amputation, so you continue to buy the same size shoes.
As for disrespectful, my old dad now openly states that he is legless before he hits the pub, and if a child asks him where his other leg is (during the summer when the prosthetic gets a bit hot and uncomfortable) he tells them it was tired - so he left it at home.
My best mate Jane lost both due to a blood disorder, but to look at her you would not know it, she wears highly fashionable clothes. Her dresses are a bit longer now, and she cant get on high heels lol, but she still is a shop-a-holic for shoes.
Wooden legs are not used now, the prostethic is made of alloy tube, with a nylon hinge at the knee (if lost above) and a plastic foot. The leg is suppord in a moulded fiberglass or plastic cup. The young man will have to wait until his amputation wound hardens up before this can be fitted. The leg comes in different fittings, the basic model is foam, with a cotton cover, fitted with a sock.
The NSH special is skin toned cloth covered, but the better legs have latex skin effect coverings.

Well as shoes are usually sold in pairs, he'd probably need to buy two shoes. But bear in mind that amputees often manage to use a prosthetic leg which allows them to walk again, and so they will still need the other shoe when and if they are able to use a prothesis.
Most amputees have better things to be worrying about.

No, unfortunately, shoes or sold as a pair. He can always keep the extra shoe if he ever gets a prosthetic limb.

At regular stores he would have to buy a pair of shoes. There are organizations that enable people who don't need both shoes to share. That way there are some shoes available at no charge.

He'll have to buy a pair of shoes.
There are so few amputees that it would make no sense for a shoe manufacturer to produce them as single items.
However if he has shoes hand-made to order then yes I expect he could have a single one.

I expect ebay sell odd shoes , but if he had a wooden leg he would need a pair anyway.

I don't know if it's still around, but there used to by an organization where people with only one foot can exchange the unneeded shoe with those in the same boat.
