I renewed mine this time last year and it took around two weeks to get back to me. I used the post office's checking service, which costs slightly more but which can help your application be processed more quickly. If you're in a rush you can make an appointment to go to the nearest passport office to apply in that person and in that case you can get your passport that day or the day after.

It varies depending on the season - obviously summer is peak time so takes the longest.

You can reduce the time by paying a small fee to the post office who will check that everything has been filled in correctly before it is sent off. You usually get it back in about a week then.
