Why can't we just put it on a plate n cool off? What kind of wire rack is normally used to cool a cake? Would i get it in the bake needs section of store?

Yes...you can get them in the bake ware section at most stores. A cooling rack allows the cake to cool evenly ... a hot cake sticks to a plate. The same kind of rack used when baking cookies.

Yes you can put it on a plate, but it will take longer to cool. The reason for the wire rack is that air can circulate all around it & it will take less time for the cake to cool. If you have a collendar with feet, turn it upside down & put the plate on it - you want as much circulation around it as possible. Wire racks can be purchased in any store with a baking section - even some dollar stores.

You usually wait 10 minutes before you remove a cake from the pan. Steam will build up between the pan and the cake making it easier to remove. If you don't then you will more then likely have to fight the pan for the cake. A gridded rack where air can circulate is best to cool your cake with. It makes it easier to frost when the crust isn't soggy. You might try your oven rack but the spacing is pretty far apart the cake may not be supported properly. A regular cake plate might be OK, but expect a little sweat on the bottom of the cake and for it to slightly stick to the plate. Good Luck!

That's exactly where you'd find it at. The reason you're supposed to use a wire rack is so that the air can flow beneath the cake. If you use a plate the cake will sweat a bit and become soft or soggy on that side. But I still do it all the time. If it's not for a special thing for a picky person then I'd just use the plate.

Pie Cooling Rack

sara,

The cake is put on a rack so that air could circulate under the cake to facilitate cooling. A plate would work, but is not as efficient...it would take much longer to cool.

Racks specially made for cooling cakes work, but aren't necessary. Any wire rack will do, as long as it's clean.

I've had to buy a wire rack (which are located in the baking section) due to the various things I bake now. But before I got one, I would just flip over a cupcake tin (it allows air flow under the pan) and lay the cake pan on top of that to allow enough cooling time (about 10 minutes in the cake pan) then flip it over on to my cake plate. You don't want your cake flipped over immediately from the oven or it will cause your cake to sweat on the bottom of your serving plate or have part of your cake stick to the bottom of your baking pan. If you don't have a cupcake tin I would use 4 of the same size cups or glasses inverted and spread out just enough that the pan sits on top of them. This allows air to flow under the pan. Hope this helps.

I usually put the cake on a plate or whatever I will be serving it on to cool. You can get a cooling rack at any store that sells kitchen supplies.

You can find a cooling rack in any baking supply store or a baking section of a grocery or department store. You really don't need one but the air flow to the bottom of the cake helps it to cool faster.

Take the cake out of the oven.
Let cool for 10 minutes;place a plate over the top of the pan & invert.
It works fine.
Good luck.
