For the most part, if eligible, foreign nationals may have multiple concurrent visas, of different categories. Unless your B1/B2 visa was canceled in your presence, or you were notified that it was canceled, it should still be valid. If you are uncertain, check with the nearest US foreign mission.

You only have one status at a time.
If your visa in your passport is still valid and your J1 visa has expired you can apply for entry into the U.S. under your B1/B2 visa. But if both were vaild you would only use the J1.

You can only be in one status at a time. If you're in the country on one status, but you want to change to a B, you can apply for a change of status, or just exit and re-enter the US on your B visa. The B visa is one that can be valid until the expiration date, but usally each visit is for about six months.
