It depends on what is causing the condition. There could be an infection or some form of lung disease. If an over the counter medication does not relieve symptoms and they persist beyond 4-5 days, a doctor should be seen.

lemsip with a bit of scotch whisky or benylin mixed in a bit of hot water or why not try all three...you get a good nights sleep and the cough doesn't keep you up all night
