This is what you say to him....John, or Frank whatever his name is,,,,,I really like you, and I care about you alot. But I'm worried that this relationship may ruin our friendship in the long run. I really really value you as a friend and I think that if we stay together I'm risking possibly losing you completely as a really good friend if anything goes wrong. I think we should take a break and maybe just go back to being friends so that we'll always have eachother...

Be honest with him. Tell him that you just see him as a friend and you just don't feel the same. Tell him he is a nice guy and bring his self-esteem up and say that there will be someone else who likes him for who he is. (Kinda even out the "rejection.") You just don't feel the same way.
